Family Meeting Success (Private)
Family Meeting Success (Private)
This two-hour session is meant for parents together with their children ages 8 and older (parents may have kids who are younger but Elisabeth needs to agree to their presence in the session before hand).
In this session, Elisabeth will walk families through the four recommended parts of a family meeting. Elisabeth with teach Part I, explaining its purpose and benefits, and then lead families through that part. She will do the same for Parts II, III and IV.
By the end of the session the family will have effectively experienced a full meeting and will be ready to conduct future meetings on their own.
The session includes a copy of my Family Meeting Ebook and a printable checklist to remind you each week of the key parts of the family meeting, so that even young family members can take a turn leading the meeting.
FAMILY MEETINGS are one of my favorite tools. They provide a lot of benefit with a time commitment as little as an hour a week. The are flexible see to the needs of both younger children and tweens and teens as well as parents.
Let me go into more detail about the reasons I put Family Meetings in my top three of things I like to teach.
1. Having a regular time for weekly (or monthly, at least) meetings tells your kids that they are part of a unit, not just a collection of individuals who live together.
2. Bringing up problems for the whole family to solve reinforces the idea that every member’s input is valuable.
3. Bringing up problems for the whole family to solve gives the chance for kids to learn creative thinking and critical analysis.
4. Regular calendar check ins allow families to be pro-active and to anticipate and address calendar conflicts with enough time to resolve them.
5. By adding concerns to the agenda during the week, parents and kids alike can let a conflict go in the moment, knowing that there is a dedicated time devoted to addressing that issue at the meeting.
6. Regular calendar check ins allow families to anticipate sticky or taxing situations and brainstorm ideas for how to handle those challenges.
7. Family meetings provide a weekly opportunity for parents and kids alike to practice their active listening skills
8. By switching off every week who directs the agenda, children develop their leadership skills.
9. Encouraging children to add their own agenda items honors their individual needs and desires and thereby builds their self-confidence and self-worth.
10. While many tools are most effective with little kids, family meetings are one tool which becomes more and more impactful as kids get older.
